According to the federal government, there are 870,141 electric vehicles in operation across the country. Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari responded in writing to a question from a member of the state assembly, saying, "In 2015, the Ministry of Heavy industries started the Fame india project to promote the usage of electric and hybrid vehicles in India." 

The second phase of the Fame india project, which began on april 1, 2019, and will last for five years at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore, is currently being implemented. The GST on electric vehicles has been decreased from 12% to 5%, while the GST on electric vehicles and charging stations has been reduced from 18% to 5%. In tamil Nadu, 44,817 electric vehicles are in operation, with 1,386 in Pondicherry. In total, 870,141 electric vehicles are in operation in the United States.
