Sandra Bullock's new love comedy The Lost City brilliantly reverses a sequence she had with Ryan Reynolds in a former romantic comedy. Bullock and her new screen companion Channing Tatum star in The Lost City, in which the two go on an unexpected trip in search of wealth and love. After starring in multiple rom-com hits during the 1990s and 2000s, Sandra Bullock is well-versed in the cliches of the genre. Her latest picture smartly plays off a scene she once enjoyed with a past co-star because she's pretty much done it all.

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds co-starred in the film The Proposal in 2009. In general, the film follows the same opposites-attract narrative as The Lost City, with the two main protagonists falling in love unexpectedly throughout the film. While The Proposal is set mostly in Alaska and The Lost City's ending takes place on a secret island, some parallels emerge despite the differences in setting and cause for Sandra Bullock's visit. In fact, the new film does an excellent job of reversing an iconic Bullock-Reynolds moment.

Following Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt's characters' rescue of Sandra Bullock in The Lost City, Tatum and Bullock are left to fend for themselves in the jungle. Loretta Sage, played by Sandra Bullock, enters a river to avoid being detected as they attempt to run from the bad guys. She slips and falls into the river, prompting Tatum's Alan to jump into the water to save her. Loretta then inquires as to what he is doing, claiming that she does not require assistance because she is capable of swimming. The Lost City flips a scene from The Proposal thanks to this scene. Sandra Bullock's character in the film is unable to swim and need Ryan Reynolds' assistance after falling off a boat.
