The Gray Man, a Netflix action movie blockbuster based on the 2009 spy thriller novel by Mark Greaney, is the streaming service's most recent attempt at the genre. The Gray Man's filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo reunite with several of their Marvel Cinematic Universe colleagues, including chris Evans' Captain America as well as writers christopher Markus and stephen McFeely. The Russos collected a star-studded cast for their second directing project since wrapping off Phase 3 of the MCU with Avengers: Endgame, including Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, and Dhanush. The Gray Man is a spiritual homage to action films from the 1980s and 1990s, complete with heart-pounding fight scenes, hilariously corny dialogue, and a wickedly entertaining villain.

Gosling plays Sierra Six, a member of a CIA secret unit made up of ex-offenders hired by Donald Fitzroy to carry out covert assassinations, in the action movie The Gray Man. Six is asked by Denny Carmichael of the CIA to kill a target, but the assignment proves to be trickier than anticipated. When Six is forced to flee, Carmichael must hire the psychotic mercenary Lloyd Hansen. Six enlists the aid of old allies, such as his former CIA ally Margaret Cahill, and CIA operative Dani Miranda in order to survive the assassins Hansen hires to track him, such as the fearsome Avik San. Even though Six is a top CIA agent, it is uncertain whether he will be able to survive the ordeal and save Fitzroy's niece Claire in the process.

The movie skips over a lot of the CIA politics around the Sierra programme and the plot of The Gray Man, as adapted by Markus and McFeely, and instead focuses on the action sequences and character development, especially for Gosling's Six and Evans' Lloyd. The script itself is jam-packed with corny jokes, such as the remark that Ryan Gosling reminds one of a Ken doll and the directive to "make him dead." Evans, who is devilishly electrifying in the role of the psychotic villain, delivers each of these with just the proper amount of panache.

In addition to Gosling and Evans, The Gray Man includes a fantastic supporting cast who contribute to the movie's engaging personality and exciting action. Even though the supporting cast only has a small amount of material to work with, they all pull their weight. De Armas gives Dani some dimension as she collaborates with Gosling's Six and undoubtedly demonstrates her action prowess after being underutilised in No Time to Die. Though they don't necessarily outperform the headliners, Thornton, Woodard, and Butters are adequate in their supporting parts. The Gray Man's Dhanush, on the other hand, stands out. Even though he only plays a little part, Six finds his brutally violent character to be a terrifying adversary.

The captivating performances of Gosling and Evans boost The Gray Man, which the Russo brothers have produced as an exciting summer snack movie. Despite being in the style of corny action films from the 1980s and 1990s, The Gray Man is nevertheless enjoyable and worth watching again.
