How did Valmiki become a Maharishi?
There is no concrete evidence about the birth of Maharishi Valmiki. According to some beliefs, he was born to Varun, the ninth son of Maharishi Kashyap and Aditi, and his wife Charshani. It is said that after birth, he was taken away by the people of the Bhil community during his childhood, after which he was brought up in the Bhil society and his name was Ratnakar. He used to rob people to feed his family.
After this incident, Ratnakar became Maharishi Valmiki
It is said that once Ratnakar dacoit had taken Narad muni captive in the forest, then Narad asked what will you get from these wrong actions? Ratnakar told that to feed my family, Narad briefed him that for whom you are walking on the wrong path, ask them whether they will bear the fruits of your sinful deeds.
After listening to Narad, Ratnakar asked his family, but all the family members refused to do so. This incident extremely depressed Ratnakar so he left the sinful path and became engulfed in devotion of Rama. It was only after this that he was enlightened to pen the epic Ramayana.
