The supreme court ruled that multiplexes and movie theatres have the authority to set rules and decide whether to allow outside food and drink on their property. During a petition hearing for a ban on outside food in theatres, the sc made this observation. "The theatre is not a gym where you should bring healthy food. It is both a private residence and a venue of entertainment. Owner discretion is granted within the bounds of statutory regulations. It is acceptable to insist that people should not be permitted to possess weapons or that caste or gender discrimination should not exist. The supreme court questioned how the high court could rule that people could bring any food inside the movie theatres.

The bench noted that the cinemas have already been ordered to give free food and clean water, especially for youngsters, and claimed that the high court had exceeded its mandate. Viewers can choose whether or not to attend a movie, but once they enter the theatre, they must follow by the restrictions set forth by the management, it was noted.
