International Literacy Day:Why it is celebrated on Sept 8th?

Every year on september 8, people all over the world celebrate international Literacy Day to raise awareness of the value of literacy as a matter of human rights and dignity and to advance the literacy agenda in the direction of a more literate and sustainable society. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) observes the day globally, regionally, nationally, and locally. On september 8, 2023, in Paris, France, a conference will be held both in person and online.

According to the official website, this worldwide celebration will include the announcement of this year's outstanding winning programmes at the UNESCO international Literacy Prizes award ceremony. Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Laying the groundwork for sustainable and peaceful societies is the theme for this year.

The celebration of international Literacy Day in 2023 will provide a chance to advance the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), which focuses on education and lifelong learning, as well as to consider how literacy contributes to the creation of inclusive, just, and sustainable societies. international Literacy Day was first observed in 1967, despite the fact that it was established by UNESCO on october 26, 1966, during the 14th session of the organization's general conference. The goal of this day is to emphasise the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and society as a whole because it is the foundation of an intelligent and productive society.
