In the United Nations General assembly, india voted in support of a draft resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian truce in the Israel-Hamas war as well as the unconditional release of all captives. The draft resolution, offered by Egypt, was accepted by the 193-member UN General assembly at an Emergency Special Session here on Tuesday. The motion was passed with 153 votes in support, 23 abstentions, and 10 votes against it.

The resolution, co-sponsored by Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Palestine, demanded an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and reiterated its demand that all parties comply with their international law obligations, "particularly about civilian protection."

The statement also called for the "immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access."

The resolution, however, did not name Hamas, and the US proposed an amendment to the draft resolution, requesting the inclusion of the following paragraph in the main text: "Unequivocally rejects and condemns the heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas that took place in israel beginning 7 october 2023 and the taking of hostages." The modification was approved by India.

In october, india voted against a motion calling for an urgent humanitarian cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war and unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza. The Jordanian-drafted resolution further urged that vital products and services be provided to citizens across the Gaza Strip immediately, continuously, in adequate quantities, and without interruption.

The decision in the UNGA on tuesday comes only days after the UN Security Council's 15-member body failed to pass a resolution on the Israel-Hamas conflict that would have demanded an immediate humanitarian truce after permanent member the united states vetoed the text.

The United Arab Emirates-sponsored UN Security Council resolution received 13 votes in favor, with the united kingdom abstaining.

On october 7, at over 1,200 people were killed, including 33 children, and others were injured in terror strikes carried out by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups. According to the Gaza Ministry of health (MoH), at least 18,205 Palestinians have been killed, with around 70% of those murdered being women and children, and approximately 49,645 wounded, according to the UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
