While tamil Nadu Higher education minister Ponmudi was sentenced to 3 years in jail in the asset hoarding case, there was a commotion as electricity was cut off in many parts of Villupuram. During last 2006-2011, when he held the post of minister of Higher education and Mineral Resources in the DMK regime, he earned more than Rs. Anti-corruption department filed a case against minister Ponmudi and his wife Visalakshi during the AIADMK regime for accumulating assets of 1.75 crores. The details of the punishment were announced today after the court found minister Ponmudi guilty in the case of amassing assets beyond his income.
 
Minister Ponmudi and his wife Visalakshi were sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and both were fined Rs. 50 lakh fine has been imposed. Judge Jayachandran ordered that the jail sentence be suspended for 30 days and that an appeal can be filed within that time. 

Earlier, as usual, the volunteers who had come to Villupuram DMK office were eagerly waiting for the verdict. As the details of the punishment were announced, electricity was cut off in many parts of Villupuram for about half an hour. And the volunteers who had joined the party office went back in sorrow.
