Ammonia gas spills from a fertiliser plant; 36 being treated...

Officials from Coromandel international Ltd., a firm that manufactures fertilizer, reported that ammonia gas spilled from their ennore site on tuesday night, sending nearly sixty individuals to the hospital.

Concerns regarding industrial safety and the region's environmental impact were raised after the event, which occurred during pre-cooling operations of an underwater pipeline, was reported at approximately 11:45 p.m.

The strong ammonia smell woke up residents of adjacent villages including Periyakuppam and Chinnakuppam, and many of them complained of being out of breath, according to officials. So far, the impact has touched at least 100 people.

Several of the almost sixty hospitalized patients needed first assistance for respiratory and ocular discomfort. As of wednesday night, thirty-six patients were still under surveillance; six were in a government hospital and thirty were in private ones, according to officials. The local police were notified of complaints over the ammonia odor, and emergency services were dispatched promptly. A little over sixty individuals were transported to hospitals by ambulances and public transportation that the district administration and police coordinated with the industrial unit.

Fear struck the community after the incident, and many families left their areas. "All of a sudden, we were out of breath and were experiencing severe burning in our nose, eyes, throats, and chests. Even a few folks passed out. One of the people who was evacuated from the area, Chandra Bose, said, "Many of us who were taken to hospitals required oxygen support." Meanwhile, State health Minister M Subramanian stated that all of the patients were stable and under surveillance during his visitation of the hospitals and affected area on Wednesday.

President and CEO of Manufacturing (Fertilizer) and Supply Chain Amir Alvi stated, "We immediately activated our standard operating procedure, isolated the ammonia system facility, and brought the situation back to normalcy in the shortest amount of time."
