In a society where being born a girl is often viewed as a disadvantage, some parents prioritize marriage over education for their daughters. Despite recognizing the need for change, many states in the country hesitate to take decisive actions to address this issue. However, a recent and noteworthy move was made by the chief minister of himachal pradesh to address this societal challenge.

In a significant decision, the chief minister chaired a cabinet meeting where it was decided to raise the legal age of marriage for girls from 18 to 21 years in Himachal Pradesh. This decision aims to encourage young girls to pursue education and attain a certain level of independence before entering into matrimony. The move reflects an understanding that empowering girls to stand on their own feet and make informed life choices is crucial.

The Himachal government had established a committee in december to explore the feasibility of raising the legal age limit for girls' marriages. The recent decision is a result of the committee's recommendations and is aligned with the growing desire among girls to marry after achieving personal and educational milestones.

This progressive step by the himachal pradesh government is seen as a timely and appropriate measure to provide legal protection in line with the aspirations of young women. It is hoped that other Chief Ministers in the telugu states and beyond will consider similar decisions to address societal challenges and promote the well-being and empowerment of girls by increasing the legal marriage age to 21 years.
