Excellent work by Mille demonstrates that she is more than just a one-trick pony. It's encouraging to watch her find her voice and take on new challenges. While not perfect, the visual effects are passable in certain areas. But the filmmakers shine in this movie when they bring the ideal dragon to life and give it the right voice (Shohreh Aghdashloo).
The movie doesn't come across as preachy even though it deals with a lot of subjects, like marriage, love, and sacrifice. Damsel is a fun read that doesn't go on for too long. Both Elodie's alone times with the dragon and the combat sequences are excellent. watch Damsel if you want to witness a strong female protagonist slay a dragon and look good doing it.
The creatively conceived Dragon is a bright spot. Regarding design, the monster is unquestionably strong. Her movements seem nearly feline, akin to a lioness with scales and wings, but the movie takes a while to fully reveal her. It's a very amazing touch that when she breathes fire, something that is in between the consistencies of fire and lava appears. Elodie has to flee from the sticky residue that follows her, in addition to the dragon fire's direct stream.
Overall, A Perfect Weekend Watch!
