One of the primary justifications for the caa is that it gives illegal immigrants—such as Christians, Sikhs, and Hindus—who are members of religious minorities in their home countries a road to citizenship. Proponents contend that this will allow these groups to live and operate lawfully in india while also helping to shield them from persecution.

Opponents of the caa contend that it is discriminatory and goes against the secularism and equality established in the indian Constitution. Furthermore, they contend that Muslims, who are not on the list of religious minorities that qualify for citizenship, may be singled out and subjected to persecution under the CAA.
