The battle for dominance and stories of retaliation have transformed Kalapather in the ancient city into a hotbed of criminal activity. Following two murders last week and two more attempts to kill rival groups in one evening, the wild gangs of Kalapather are making headlines again.

According to police sources, two gangs, commanded by Asad and Ashwaq, who both had unruly records at Kalapather police stations, were at odds with one another and were letting their fight for supremacy show on the streets of the old city. In actuality, Asad was detained by authorities in january 2024 for plotting Ashwaq's murder along with two other conspirators.

"There is a struggle for domination and supremacy in that field. As both gangs compete with one another for power, revenge killings are a part of the struggle for control, according to a former hyderabad Commissioner's Task Force employee.

Various gangs fought for control over areas within the boundaries of the Kamatipura, Falaknuma, Mailardevpally, Shahalibanda, and Kalapather police stations for at least thirty years. In these neighbourhoods, there were rowdy sheeters like ayub khan, Adil, Ashwaq, Rustum, Waseem, Shahnoor Ghazi, and Younus who had committed a range of crimes, including property, drug, and physical offences.

Ayub Khan became well-known at the beginning of 2002 after he was accused of murdering a lawyer. At about the same time, Ashwaq, his colleague, started another gang, but they worked on distinct projects. Unruly elements from the city's southwest, including Habeebnagar and Nampally, began aiding occasional wild sheeters and made an effort to base themselves here.

"Many physical offences, including killings, occurred in the name of supremacy in the community. In addition to settling minor conflicts, the gangs plunder hawala operators, organisers of betting events, and gambling dens. A police official who used to work in the old city remarked, "They extort money from brothel houses, PDS rice and wheat smugglers, and collect mamools from different hotels and shops."

As ayub khan supposedly transformed over time and his cronies were either eliminated or escaped, Ashwaq, Shahnoor Ghazi, Younus, Asad, and Anwar promptly filled the void.

"Shahnoor Ghazi's opponents murdered him. His cronies subsequently murdered one or two of the people who had assisted in Ghazi's murder. The official stated, "At least five members of both gangs were murdered."

There are a number of slums in the Kalapather belt, which has a radius of around 4 km. There are also many of lanes and tiny by ways, which make it easy for the unruly elements to trick the authorities. It won't be possible to check gang activity with just technology. An ACP who once served as SHO Kalapather stated, "A strong informer network should be established and information about their movement should be gathered on a regular basis."
