The formation of the telugu desam party (TDP) in andhra pradesh created a political sensation, as no party had ever come to power within nine months of its inception. The late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) founded the telugu desam party as a symbol of the self-respect of the telugu people. ntr then toured the state extensively in the chaitanya Ratham, spending more time on this tour than at home, becoming familiar with the people over the nine-month period.

His son, Harikrishna, actively participated in the tour as the charioteer of the chaitanya Ratham, which made him well-known among the party leaders. Despite having a special image in the party, Harikrishna always adhered to his father's guidance and worked as an ordinary member while ntr was alive. Harikrishna was always accessible to all party workers, and both he and ntr wore khaki outfits during the election campaign to show solidarity with the workers. junior ntr also carried on this legacy, campaigning extensively for tdp in a khaki dress during the 2009 elections.

Harikrishna was considered NTR's political successor. However, in 1995, when chandrababu naidu rebelled against ntr, Harikrishna supported Naidu to protect the state from what he saw as unconstitutional forces. He served as a minister but resigned after six months since he was not an mla at that time. Following NTR's death, Harikrishna won a by-election with a significant majority but did not receive a ministerial position. Disillusioned with the developments in the party, Harikrishna eventually fell out with chandrababu naidu and left tdp to found the Anna telugu Desam Party.

In the 1999 election, Harikrishna contested from gudivada on behalf of the Anna telugu desam party but lost to the tdp candidate. After the defeat, Harikrishna merged his party back into tdp and remained politically inactive for several years. In 2008, he was elected to the rajya sabha, representing Telangana. He resigned from the rajya sabha in 2013 in opposition to the state bifurcation. His passionate speech in telugu against the division of andhra pradesh resonated deeply with the telugu people.

Throughout his career, Harikrishna left an indelible mark in politics as an mla, minister, and rajya sabha MP. His contributions and steadfast commitment to his principles earned him a lasting legacy in the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh.
