When a passenger's trip from hyderabad to New York via dubai was cancelled in 2021 owing to COVID-19, the consumer court in hyderabad ordered Etihad Airways to pay Rs 1,11,248 to the customer. The airline had neglected to issue a refund or reschedule the passenger's tickets.

Etihad has been ordered to repay the total money plus 9% interest from the date of cancellation to the present, along with an extra Rs 20,000 in compensation. They have 45 days starting on june 27 to comply, failing which they would be subject to an additional 3% interest charge. Additionally, Rs 10,000 was requested to cover legal fees.

The traveller approached Etihad's Mehdipatnam office to buy his airline tickets to New York from hyderabad with a layover in dubai, via Abu Dhabi. The passenger filed a complaint with the consumer forum in february 2021.

The complaint stated that the airlines did not reimburse or reschedule the tickets after the flights were cancelled, even though they were contacted many times. Etihad asserted, however, that the complaint contacted them far later than the extended deadline of march 2022—in July 2021.

Due to COVID-19, Etihad has already moved forward the date for refunds or rescheduling from october to March. Nevertheless, a May 2022 email written to Etihad's customer service was discovered, confirming that he submitted an appeal within the allotted time.
