A pan-Indian film must now reach the 1000-crore milestone in order to be deemed successful. dangal was the first movie to accomplish this feat in 2016, owing to its phenomenal success in China, which increased its total earnings to about 2000 crores globally. Then came Baahubali 2, which made almost 1700 crores worldwide. A number of other films, including Jawan, RRR, kgf 2, and Pathaan, have also surpassed the 1000 crore mark.

But films like Animal, which took in 900 crores, and kalki 2898 AD, which was estimated to have made between 920 and 950 crores, just missed this threshold. The tamil film business has yet to accomplish the accomplishment of producing a 1000-crore film, while Tollywood, Bollywood, and the kannada film industry have all succeeded in doing so.

There was a lot of expectation that Vijay's Leo, ponniyin selvan, and indian 2 would break beyond this barrier. indian 2 has been a major disappointment, despite Leo managing to make over 600 crores and the ponniyin selvan serial earning approximately 800 crores from its two parts. indian 2 was expected to gross 1000 crores because it is a sequel, shankar has a well-known brand, and Kamal Haasan's popularity has returned after Vikram. But the movie has been a huge failure and a huge disappointment; it now seems improbable that it would ever make more than 200 crores globally.
 
The tamil film industry is currently aiming to cross the coveted 1000-crore mark with Vijay's and Kanguva's GOAT. Though it's a difficult objective, in the always changing world of cinema, nothing is impossible. For the tamil film business, reaching the 1000-crore milestone is still a long way off.
