Despite being generally understood, the casting couch problem is frequently kept silent in the tollywood community. Actress and former bigg boss contestant Sanjana Anne recently revealed her own experience with it. A filmmaker called her for a meeting when she was first starting out as a model and looking for parts in films.

She thought at first that he was suggesting a movie part, but quickly realized that he was really hinting at something much darker: he was asking for sexual favors in exchange for advancing his career. When Sanjana declined, an unsettling series of events transpired. She was harassed by the director and his manager, who made disparaging remarks and attempted to intimidate her. She refused to back down in the face of this, finally going up against the director one-on-one and even giving him a smack for it.

Sanjana explained her reluctance to reveal the director's name in a recent interview. She was afraid that outing his name would ruin his reputation and cause embarrassment and suffering for his family, particularly his kids. Like her, a lot of victims are reluctant to come forward with the names of their abusers for fear that it would embarrass them and hurt their families.

This dread of the repercussions feeds a vicious circle in which the powerful feel safe in their ability to take advantage of others. They get the self-assurance to participate in casting couch activities without worrying about being held accountable. Many more up-and-coming stars would be vulnerable to abuse in the film business with such a mindset.
