With the cost of tomatoes shooting up to Rs. 100 per kg, there doesn't appear to be any relief in sight for the people of Hyderabad. The price per kilogram shot up from Rs. 80 to Rs. 100 in only one week, and merchants expect it to grow much higher. The price increase has also resulted in a sharp decline in sales volume as consumers in hyderabad are turning to other veggies rather than tomatoes.

The imbalance between supply and demand caused by crop damage after intense rains in telangana and other states is the cause of the recent spike in tomato prices in Hyderabad. Tomatoes are scarce in the city due of significant crop losses brought on by sporadic rains.

In the meanwhile, several cafes and restaurants have started reducing the amount of pulpy fruit they use in food preparation as a result of the increase in tomato costs.

But this is not the first time that tomato prices have skyrocketed. They had previously increased to Rs. 200 per kilogram.

Considering that IMD hyderabad has projected significant rainfall in the upcoming days, it is unclear how much higher the prices would soar this time.
