Free bus trips for women throughout the state under the Mahalakshmi plan were one of the six main promises made by the congress party during the telangana assembly elections. congress was able to secure the majority of Telangana's female votes because of this pledge. This plan was initiated by chief minister Revanth reddy within 48 hours of taking office on december 9, 2023. Since then, countless numbers of women have routinely used this free bus program to get around.

Reports state that over 30 lakh women in telangana use the free bus program each day. women in the state have so far taken advantage of 68.60 million free bus trips through TGSRTC, totaling Rs. 2350 crore in the last seven months. This indicates that telangana women have saved a total of Rs. 2350 crore under the Mahalakshmi initiative.

To date, the telangana government has compensated TGSRTC for a total of Rs. 1740 crore. In the meantime, proponents of the government said that the Mahalakshmi initiative is assisting congress to assist TGSRTC in becoming a billion-dollar institution. Other states like tamil Nadu and karnataka also provide the "free ride for women" program. On august 15, it would begin in Andhra Pradesh.
