Robert Downey Jr., star of iron Man, is returning to the MCU as doctor Doom, a revelation that stunned the whole crowd at San Diego Comic-Con and the rest of the globe. Avengers: Doomsday, the fifth big crossover film from Marvel, will be a dramatic departure from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with a heavy emphasis on the iconic villain Victor von Doom. Though RDJ is already one of the greatest heroes in the history of the MCU, one has to question how in the world it would work to have him portray one of Marvel's biggest villains.
The fifth Avengers film received an official title announcement along with the announcement that doctor Doom will play a significant role before Avengers: Secret Wars, which came as an equally significant confirmation that the Russo Brothers would indeed be directing both Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. Still, very few could have foreseen that Robert Downey Jr. would portray the villain, despite recent, seemingly absurd rumors to the contrary. It's time to consider all the different possibilities that RDJ may truly make a comeback as doctor Doom shortly in the MCU.
First of all, the MCU is still in the middle of its Multiverse Saga. At this stage, the ideas of several versions of heroes and villains from other universes, timelines, and worlds have essentially been established. Peter Parker from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has the opportunity to battle with several Spider-Man incarnations from previous sony films. Through several timelines, Loki was able to locate and meet his own variations. There was an assembly of Kangs in the council. Having said that, with RDJ playing the new doctor Doom, there has never been a greater use of the universe in casting than there is right now.
