The number of people killed in the spate of landslides in Kerala's wayanad district has risen to 143, while hundreds more remain trapped and injured. The landslides uprooted trees, severely damaged buildings and roads, and caused water bodies to rise. Using every resource at hand, efforts are still being made to identify and save the missing people.

• The rescue efforts comprise personnel from the fire and rescue, civil defense, NDRF, and local emergency response teams, according to the kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA). There are also about 200 indian Army members present from DSC Centre Kannur and 122 TA Battalion from Kozhikode. A Mi-17 and an ALH helicopter from the air Force are also assisting in the coordination of the rescue efforts.

• More than 120 wounded and rescued people are being treated at several wayanad hospitals.

• Veena George, the Keralan minister of health, reports that the postmortem examination of 116 bodies has finished.


• On Wednesday, July 31, all educational institutions will be closed due to the calamity and nonstop rain. Eleven districts, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta, have also announced holidays, according to Onmanorama.

• For wayanad and the surrounding districts, the india Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "orange" advisory, indicating severe to extremely heavy rainfall on July 31 and august 1. In addition, the meteorological service has forecast a lot of rain on august 2. According to the IMD, on July 30 and 31, "strong surface winds with speeds reaching 30–40 kmph with occasional gusts to 50 kmph are likely to prevail over Kerala."
