The india Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast "heavy to very heavy rainfall" for isolated areas of kerala on Wednesday. This comes just one day after landslides in two villages in the southern state of kerala caused by the nonstop rains over the previous few days left at least 148 people dead and 128 injured, with hundreds more reported missing. A warning of "heavy to very heavy rainfall" is in effect for august 1 as well. The state is expected to see "heavy" rains the following day.

According to the IMD, "strong surface winds with gusts of up to 50 kmph are likely to prevail occasionally over kerala on July 31." The Mundakkai and Chooramala sections under the Meppadi Panchayat's Vellarimala hamlet were destroyed by the two enormous landslides that occurred on Tuesday. The landslides happened around 4:10 a.m. and 2 a.m.

Due to the calamity, all educational facilities will be closed on Wednesday. Eleven districts, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta, have also announced holidays.

In addition, the kerala government has proclaimed an official state of mourning, and the national flag will fly at half-mast. The administration has canceled all of the planned public events and celebrations.

"The rescue operations have been ongoing since yesterday morning. Yesterday, due to bad weather conditions, the rescue teams were not able to rescue a lot of people. Around 500 to 600 personnel from the NDRF team, army, state police, forest officials, and volunteers have been carrying out the rescue operations today. We are trying our best to build the bridge again so that we can move the earth-moving equipment inside and make the digging process easier. We have been doing the process manually as of now," says Brigadier arjun Seagan, Commandant, Para Regimental Training Centre.
