Wayanad disaster: Centre warns kerala of severe rain...

The kerala government was alerted by the Center on July 23 about the risk of heavy rain and landslides, according to Union home minister amit shah, who testified before the rajya sabha on Wednesday. This was seven days prior to the wayanad district landslides that resulted in at least 144 deaths and the destruction of numerous villages.

According to Shah, the state government received warnings on July 24, July 25, and July 26 after nine teams of the National Disaster Response Force were sent to kerala on July 23.

After a calling-attention motion on the wayanad disaster, Shah clarified the government's position, stating that although opposition MPs had called for the creation of an early warning system for such circumstances, warnings had already been issued in this instance. State governments had made efforts to keep the number of fatalities from recent cyclone warnings to one in odisha and zero in Gujarat, he said.

According to Shah, since 2014, the central government has invested Rs 2,000 crore in the early warning system, and each state receives information seven days beforehand. "This is the time to stand with the kerala government and the people of kerala," he declared, not pointing the finger at anyone. Earlier, opposition members of parliament demanded that the government declare the landslides a national emergency and provide kerala with a special funding package to address the consequences. kerala CPM mp John Brittas stated that kerala had experienced 60% of all landslides in the nation over the previous seven years. He declared, "We have been appealing to the indian government to give the kerala government relief."

A A Rahim, a different kerala CPM mp, stated that the state lacked sufficient sophisticated radar for weather forecasting. He declared, "Kerala has been demanding a modern doppler radar since 2013," adding that although he had brought up the request in the house, the government had disregarded it. In response to the calling-attention motion, minister of State for home Affairs nityanand rai stated that 133 bodies had been found thus far in the wayanad tragedy.
