Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer, defeated angela Carini of italy in 46 seconds during the paris Olympics, setting off a heated discussion about gender eligibility regulations. Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni said that the bout was "not on an equal footing." "I believe that athletes with male genetic traits shouldn't be allowed to compete in women's events," Meloni declared at a paris meeting with Italian athletes.

In a post on X, Meloni wrote, “I know that you won't give up Angela, and I know that one day you will get what you deserve through strength and sweat. In a competition that is finally equal.” Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of taiwan were eliminated from the international Boxing Association's (IBA) 2023 World Championships due to their inability to fulfil the requirements necessary to compete in the women's division.

The IBA stated in a statement on wednesday that "the athletes did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognised test, whereby the specifics remain confidential."

"The urgent nature of the decision (to disqualify the boxers) was justified, as the safety of our boxers is our top priority."

However, Khelif was declared qualified to box in the women's tournament in paris by the international Olympic Committee, which later justified the decision by labelling it as arbitrary.

The ioc released a statement saying, "These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA." "They were abruptly disqualified at the end of the 2023 IBA World Championships without following the proper procedures.

Khelif threw a flurry of blows at Carini before the Algerian pulled away, hurting her and brushing off attempts to shake hands. An enormous outcry was generated online when the Italian fighter fell to her knees and started crying hysterically in the middle of the ring.
