On august 1, 2024, a terrible landslip that left a path of devastation and casualties rocked the Keralan region of Wayanad. Landslides in the wayanad hills were caused by heavy rains in the area, resulting in extensive damage and several fatalities. Actress Nayanthara has offered to donate ₹20 lakhs to the kerala Chief Minister's Relief Fund via her production company, Rowdy Pictures, in reaction to the tragedy.

Residents were asleep when the landslip happened in the wee hours of Tuesday. The prior two weeks had seen a lot of rain in the area, which had loosened the ground. On Monday, very high levels of precipitation caused the landslides. Nearly 350 structures in the impacted districts, which included Mundakkai and Chooralmala, were demolished or severely damaged. Several bridges and roads washed away, trapping numerous people.

The unreachable terrain at first hindered rescue attempts, but army engineers built a new bridge to reach the impacted districts. Rescue teams, including those with experience in swimming, were dispatched to look for survivors while drones equipped with earth-sensing equipment were used to locate victims buried in muck. To aid people in need, relief camps including food, water, and medical supplies have been established.

In addition to providing financial aid to impacted people, the Keralan government is attempting to rebuild infrastructure and connections. With some people still missing and others injured, the situation is very dire. It has not yet been verified how many people were killed.
