Union Environment minister Bhupender Yadav stated on monday that the wayanad tragedy was made worse by illegal mining, unchecked buildings, and unregulated commercial activities. He also accused the state administration of disregarding important characteristics of the area before authorizing such projects.

The environment ministry made it clear that, except an approval in principle for a Tube Unidirectional Tunnel Road (2+2 Lane) with Four Lane Approach (from existing highways) last year, the Centre did not provide environmental clearances for any construction activity in Wayanad. In this case, a tragic video of a guy committing suicide has shaken social media. After losing his family and home, he sacrificed himself to the landslide.

Photographs of the deformed bodies, each with a body number and postmortem information, adorned the hall's walls. These eerie pictures, which depict the features of the deceased—some of them have protruding eyeballs, mud-caked faces, and obvious decorations—tell of an unspeakable loss and anguish. To help in the identification procedure, residents and family members who think they might identify someone are asked to utilize these numbers. The words "buried" have been written in red ink next to the faces on the wall, serving as a sombre reminder of the numerous lives that the catastrophe took.
