And Vinesh Phogat has succeeded! In her third Games appearance, she won her first Olympic medal—at the very least, a silver! She is the first indian woman to compete in wrestling in the Olympics. Vinesh began the day by pulling off the apparently impossible feat of defeating Japan's Yui Susaki in her very first fight. She proceeded to triumph in her subsequent quarterfinal match and subsequently outclassed Yusneylis Guzman of cuba in the semifinal. She easily advanced to the women's 50kg final after winning the fight 5-0.

Vinesh represented india as a medal contender in Rio 2016 and tokyo 2020. After missing out on a medal in tokyo and revealing that she was dealing with another ailment throughout the event, her 2016 campaign was cut short by a career-threatening injury sustained during the competition. Her involvement in the wrestlers' protest later had an impact on her plans for paris 2024, but she has since returned and created history.

Neeraj Chopra earlier began his gold medal defence by making it to the men's javelin final on his very first try, throwing a massive 89.34 meters. In the meanwhile, china defeated the men's table tennis team in the pre-quarterfinal.
