Hema Malini, the mathura MP and leader of the bharatiya janata party (BJP), caused a controversy when she made remarks regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat's exclusion from the paris Olympics. She continued, saying, "It is quite surprising and it feels strange that she was disqualified for being 100 gm overweight." She also expressed her hope for Phogat to drop the 100 gms rapidly, but expressed disappointment that "she would not get an opportunity."


Vinesh Phogat advanced to the gold medal match on tuesday night after defeating Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of cuba 5-0 in the semifinals. But on Wednesday, august 7, the following day, she was disqualified from the 50 kg wrestling competition because she weighed 100 grams over. Lopez moves up to the semifinals in place of Phogat following her disqualification.
