On august 9 (Friday), at about 1 pm IST, the court of Arbitration for sports (CAS) will probably start hearing Vinesh Phogat's appeal at 9:30 am paris time. One hour or so later is when one can expect the interim verdict. This is a significant boost for both Vinesh Phogat and the indian Olympic Association (IOA), since the CAS acknowledged Vinesh's request on thursday in its preliminary evaluation. What's more, this maintains Vinesh Phogat's chances of winning a silver medal in women's 50kg wrestling.

A mere 24 hours prior to her gold-medal match against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States, indian wrestler Vinesh was disqualified from the paris Olympics 2024 after failing the weigh-in procedure and being discovered to be 100 grammes overweight. She became the first indian female wrestler to qualify for an Olympic final and was robbed of a podium finish even though she was guaranteed at least a medal.

Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of cuba advanced to the championship match after losing to Vinesh in the semifinals. Guzman, who became the fourth American woman to win a wrestling gold medal, was defeated by Hildebrandt 0–3.

However, Vinesh was left completely broken. The IOA authorities' and her coaches' pleas were insufficient. Not even extreme methods like shaving off her hair, staying up late drinking, and not having any alcohol for more than twelve hours would do. Every wrestler must be within the allowable limit of her weight class during the weigh-in on the morning of each contest, according to United World Wrestling (UWW) regulations. Vinesh lost her chance to win a medal and was disqualified when it was discovered that she was overweight.

All Vinesh and IOA could do was file an appeal with the CAS. The exclusion from the final was the subject of their first appeal. The indian wrestler's second request to be awarded the joint-silver medal was granted, but her request for the CAS to step in and let her compete for the gold was turned down.

Notably, on august 6, Vinesh prevailed by unanimous decision in her first three fights. She weighed 49.9 kg on tuesday morning when she was weighed in, but as her exhausting sessions continued, she was unable to go without food or drink. The very minimal amount consumed led to an unanticipated 2.7 kg weight increase.
