Which areas of the country are most vulnerable?

There have been a lot of landslides in india this year in which hundreds of people lost their lives. Recently, on the morning of 30 July 2024, landslides occurred at many places in wayanad district of Kerala. Due to heavy rains, the slopes of the hills collapsed. Due to this, a catastrophic flow of mud, water and rocks devastated the area.

According to the report, so far about 413 people have died in this accident, more than 273 are injured and 138 people are missing. This landslide is one of the deadliest natural disasters in the history of kerala and one of the major seasonal events in india in recent years.

How does a landslide happen?

Landslide means collapse or sliding of the mountain. Landslides occur when rocks, soil or garbage start sliding down the slopes of the mountains. Rain, the structure of the mountains and the soil there together cause landslides. Due to water pressure, earthquakes, erosion or volcanic eruptions, the slopes of the mountains become weak, which causes landslides.

According to a report by the National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) of the indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), most landslides occur on the slopes of the mountains. These are caused by natural causes such as heavy rains and earthquakes or by humans, such as building roads, constructing buildings or mining. According to the NRSC, about 80,000 landslides occurred in india between 1998 and 2022. Most of these occurred between june and September.
