The meeting happened in the isolated Kokernag region, deep in the Ahlan Gagarmandu forest. The militants, who were hiding in the forest, opened fire indiscriminately against the approaching search parties as security authorities conducted a cordon and search operation, according to officials.

Five army men were hurt in the ensuing gunfire; they were immediately evacuated and taken to a nearby hospital, where two of them later passed away. As per the recent reports, the officials stated, reinforcements had been deployed to the region and an operation was underway to locate and neutralize the terrorists. "Based on specific intelligence input, a Joint Operation was launched by #IndianArmy, @JmuKmrPolice & @crpf_srinagar today in general area Kokernag, anantnag," the Chinese Corps of the indian army had earlier posted on X. After making contact, a gunfight started. After suffering injuries, two employees had to be taken out of the area.

According to the army, "indiscriminate, desperate, and reckless firing by terrorists in the ongoing operation" is what caused the two civilian injuries that were reported. It said, "They have received immediate medical attention and have been evacuated further."
