48-hour deadline in the kolkata rape-murder case: IMA...

In a forceful statement released on Saturday, the indian Medical Association (IMA) threatened to stage nationwide protests if the demands for quick action in the case of the alleged rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate resident doctor in Kolkata are not fulfilled in 48 hours. The IMA expressed outrage at the trainee doctor's death and denounced the circumstances that made it possible for such a horrific crime to occur on campus.

"The entire medical fraternity of india is shocked beyond words at this brutal murder," declared the indian Medical Association. "This crime is a sign of the unrest and instability that permeate the campus." On friday morning, the semi-naked body of the young physician, a trainee in the department of chest medicine, was discovered in the seminar hall at R.G. Kar Medical College. The medical student had been sexually assaulted, according to the autopsy report, before she was strangled and smothered to death. The horrific specifics of the injuries—which include various injuries and bleeding from the lips, eyes, and private parts—have heightened the demand for prompt justice. She had cuts all over her face and nails, and she was bleeding from the mouth and eyes. The victim's intimate areas were also bleeding. In addition, her stomach, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips are all injured, according to the four-page report.

The IMA listed three main demands: an impartial and in-depth investigation into the case; an extensive examination of the circumstances that made this crime possible; and an expeditious adoption of steps to enhance the safety and security of doctors—especially women—at work.

The group has given the police a 48-hour window in which to make the necessary arrests and comply with their conditions. The IMA threatened that if this wasn't done, there would be widespread demonstrations and that the medical community was ready to act decisively. For his alleged role in the trainee doctor's sexual assault and murder, police detained one person. The accused, an outsider, was charged with rape under section 64 and murder under section 103 of the BNS. On Saturday, a city court imposed a 14-day police remand for the accused.
