Asaram bapu Rape Case - 7-Day Parole for Treatment

The rajasthan high court has granted seven days of release to Godman Asaram bapu, who is serving a life sentence in a rape case, so he may receive medical care. Under police custody, the 85-year-old godman will receive treatment in Maharashtra.

Asaram bapu had previously had two requests for parole denied by the high court, which cited possible problems with law and order if he was released. Asaram bapu was taken to AIIMS jodhpur earlier this year in february due to excruciating chest discomfort.

After being found guilty by a POCSO court in jodhpur of raping a teenage girl in his ashram, Asaram bapu was given a life sentence. He is incarcerated at Central Jail in jodhpur for life.

A Gujarati trial court found the godman guilty last year of repeatedly sexually abusing a female student at his surat ashram in 2013.

The rajasthan high court had denied Asaram Bapu's appeal for a medically-motivated sentence postponement, and the supreme court had declined to get involved in the case in March.

But the supreme court stated that the godman might go to the high court and ask for permission to receive medical care.

Asaram bapu claimed in his plea that his health was unstable and "rapidly deteriorating" through his supporters.

According to the plea, the godman had "suffered a series of heart attacks" and had previously served 11 years in prison. His january 14 cardiac angiography report, which the attorneys also quoted, revealed "arterial blockages of up to 99%".

"The petitioner, who is in the twilight of his life, aged more than 85 years, is apprehending that he may die in jail if he is not allowed to take treatment from a hospital/doctor of his choice, which is a fundamental right granted to every person, regardless of the fact whether he is a convict or an undertrial," said the petition.
