Tesla’s Indian-Origin VP Sreela Venkataraman Resigns After Over a Decade

Sreela Venkataraman, an Indian-origin Vice President of Finance and business Operations at tesla, has announced her resignation after more than ten years with the company. Venkataraman was one of only two women holding the VP title at tesla, and her departure leaves Laurie Shelby, Vice President of Environmental health and Safety, as the sole female executive at that level.

Reflecting on a Decade

In her LinkedIn farewell note, Venkataraman reflected on her tenure at tesla, which began in 2013 as director of Accounting when the company had under $1 billion in revenue and a market cap of about $4 billion. At that time, tesla delivered fewer than 3,000 electric vehicles. Today, the company reports annual revenues nearing $100 billion and had a market cap that peaked at $1 trillion during the pandemic.

Plans for the Future

Venkataraman expressed her gratitude for her colleagues and highlighted her role in expanding Tesla’s global services, including in China. She plans to take a break to spend time with family, reconnect with friends, and focus on her personal well-being.

In a LinkedIn comment, she described working at tesla as "definitely not for the faint of heart," reflecting the demanding nature of the environment under CEO Elon Musk. Her departure comes amidst a series of notable exits from tesla, including CFO Zach Kirkhorn, who was recently succeeded by Vaibhav Taneja.
