IndiGo to Introduce Gender-Neutral Option 'Mx' for Flight Bookings
indigo is set to introduce the gender-neutral honorific ‘Mx’ for flight bookings, enhancing inclusivity in its services. This move aims to offer a more inclusive option for passengers who identify outside the traditional gender binary.
Currently, the airline’s booking system provides only 'male' and 'female' options. With this update, indigo will join other carriers like air india Express and Vistara, which already offer 'Mx' as a choice.
Sukhjit S Pasricha, IndiGo’s Group Chief Human Resources Officer, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the airline's broader efforts to foster inclusivity. “The introduction of 'Mx' will allow trans and non-binary passengers to choose an option that best reflects their identity,” Pasricha told PTI.
indigo has also been actively working to support the LGBTQ+ community. This includes targeted employee referral programs to boost LGBTQ+ hires and partnerships with specialized LGBTQ+ recruitment agencies. The airline offers benefits such as gender reassignment surgery coverage and inclusion of live-in partners in medical insurance, which have been attractive features for candidates from the community.
As of march 31, 2024, indigo employs 36,860 people, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew members. Among its workforce, over 240 individuals with disabilities are employed across more than 60 cities, primarily in customer-facing roles. The airline plans to double its number of employees with disabilities in the coming financial year.
Pasricha added that placements for individuals with disabilities are based on factors like safety, accommodation needs, and skills, with a focus on merit-based hiring for roles such as customer service and cargo teams.
