126 Arrested During kolkata Protests; BJP’s Bandh Call Sparks TMC Government’s Warning

On tuesday afternoon, approximately 126 individuals were detained during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march towards the state secretariat in Kolkata. The march, originating near Howrah Bridge, was organized by student groups demanding the resignation of chief minister Mamata Banerjee in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital.

Participants, including students and citizens, joined the march while holding the national flag and chanting slogans as they proceeded to the secretariat. Amid tight security, protesters breached barricades and threw stones, leading to clashes with police who responded with tear gas and water cannons. Near Howrah Bridge, police used batons to disperse some protesters. The march was separately organized by the unregistered student group Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj (West bengal students Community) and the Sangrami Joutha Mancha (Joint Platform of Struggle), an organization of state government employees demanding parity in dearness allowances with their central government counterparts.

BJP President J.P. Nadda criticized the police’s alleged heavy-handed approach in dealing with protesters demanding justice for the rape-murder case, accusing the West bengal government of prioritizing the protection of criminals. Nadda condemned chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s silence on the crime and the misleading of the victim’s family, stating, “The images of police brutality from kolkata have outraged everyone who values democratic principles. In Didi’s West bengal, aiding rapists and criminals is valued, but speaking up for women’s safety is deemed a crime,” he posted on X.
