It still takes guts for mainstream tamil cinema to break from the heteronormative definition of love and make bold, progressive films about LGBTQIA+ issues. One of the worries would be that an untrained tamil audience might find such a movie offensive. While it's true that no traditional, orthodox community could be fully prepared, this is insufficient justification. Not any longer. It's past time that mainstream movies joined the short films and indie music that already tackle this topic.
Some even questioned if the film could be a queer love tale when it first came out. Since both kanmani and Khatija fell in love with Rambo for, well, god knows why, they would have been a better match. Their tastes even seem to be similar. It seems that Khatija and kanmani would do. Rambo was an extra, not necessary. It was, in fact, Rambo's narrative. It wasn't necessary. It could have been the tale of Khatija and Kanmani. But it can't be that because of the prevailing patriarchal culture in our sector.
