Veteran kannada actress Padmaja Rao, who starred in Shiva, Bachpan, and Rustom, was fined Rs 40.20 lakh and given a three-month jail sentence for a case involving a bounced check. In a case spanning four years about the bounce of a Rs 40 lakh cheque, a Mangaluru court has sentenced Padmaja Rao to three months in jail and a fine of Rs 40.20 lakh.

Tuesday, after the case's hearing was over, the Eighth Judicial Magistrate First Class Court—also known as the Eighth JMFC court—announced the verdict. According to the petition, Padmaja obtained a loan of Rs 40 lakh from Veerendra Shetty, the proprietor of Veeru Talkies and a resident of Mangaluru, and provided Shetty with a guarantee in the form of an icici bank check. According to the sources, on june 17, 2020, Shetty put the check at the bank for payment after Rao refused to reimburse the sum. The actress's account was later discovered to be insufficiently funded, which is why the check bounced.

Rao was sent a notice by Shetty on june 30, 2020, to return the debt within 15 days, but he did not reply. Shetty then made his way over to the court. Padmaja maintained throughout the court that she had not handed Shetty a check or taken out a loan.

The actress's attorney allegedly stated in court that her check had been taken from her home. She was unable to provide any proof in court to support her assertions, though. Following the entire hearing, the actress was finally given a three-month jail term and told to pay a fine of Rs 40.20 lakh by the court.

The complainant received INR 40.17 lakh from the court, while the government received INR 3,000. The court ordered Rao to pay INR 40.20 lakh. She will pay a fine and maybe spend three months in jail. In Bhagyalakshmi, Padmaja Rao established a standard for herself as Kusuma, the devoted mother-in-law who sticks by her daughter-in-law no matter what.
