Massive protests erupted at SR gudlavalleru Engineering college in Andhra Pradesh's krishna district on thursday after a hidden camera was discovered in a girls' hostel washroom.
Female students at the hostel protested, chanting slogans like “we want justice” and demanding that authorities take action against the perpetrator and ensure their safety on campus. The state police reported that they have identified and detained the accused, Vijay, a fellow student at the college. His laptop was seized, revealing nearly 300 obscene videos, which the police believe he may have sold to other students.
This incident comes amid widespread protests in the country following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical college and Hospital on august 9.
Political Reactions
The protests prompted reactions from political leaders. The telugu desam party announced that chief minister Nara chandrababu naidu has ordered an inquiry into the hidden cameras issue. The chief minister directed the district Collector, the SP, and district minister kollu ravindra to visit the scene immediately.
Nara Lokesh, the party’s General Secretary and the Chief Minister’s son, posted on X saying, “I have asked for details about the protests at gudlavalleru Engineering college and ordered an inquiry into the hidden camera allegations. Strict action will be taken against the culprits and anyone found negligent in the investigation. Managers need to address ragging and harassment promptly.”
YS Sharmila, andhra pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief, also called for immediate action. In a post on X, she expressed her concern as a mother and criticized the educational institutions involved. She urged for the formation of a high-level committee and an inquiry by senior IPS officers, stating, “If no action is taken by next week, I will visit the college myself.”
