Why did this country ban 'X', many allegations…?
Social media company X refused to appoint a legal officer in Brazil, after which supreme court Justice Alexander de Morias has issued an order to ban X across the country. On wednesday (30 august 2024), the judge gave Elon Musk's company a deadline to appoint a legal officer within 24 hours. Earlier, X closed its office on august 17, claiming to have received threats to put its old legal officer in jail.
A fine of 18 million reais was also imposed
According to news agency Xinhua, the X company was embroiled in controversies with Justice de Morias for not following court orders for several months. This dispute was to remove those officials who were promoting news of coup in the country and content that undermined democracy. Brazil's supreme Federal court (STF) on friday (31 august 2024) also fined X 18 million reais (about $3.2 million) for not complying.
X ignored the court order
The judge upheld the Federal Court's decision, saying that the company repeatedly, deliberately ignored the court's orders, and was also not willing to pay the fine imposed. X was accused of circumventing Brazil's legal system in the 2024 municipal elections and creating a lawless zone on social media. Justice de Moraes further said that X has facilitated the actions of extremist groups and wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital terrorists, helping to spread Nazi, racist, fascist, hateful and anti-democratic speech." The Brazilian judge also ordered the country's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to block X within 24 hours. apple and google have five days to remove the X app from their online stores.
