Bluetooth Earbud Key in Solving and Convicting 2023 bengal Dacoity and murder Case

In a groundbreaking case in West bengal, a Bluetooth earbud played a crucial role in both the arrest and conviction of five men involved in a dacoity and murder. On Saturday, the Barrackpore Additional district and Sessions court convicted the men for their roles in the crime that took place in Titagarh in 2023.

Interestingly, a Bluetooth earbud also contributed to the breakthrough in another recent case involving the rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital. The primary suspect, Sanjoy Roy, had inadvertently left his earbud at the crime scene, leading to his arrest.

Details of the Case:

On May 24, 2023, a dacoity and murder were reported at a jewelry shop under the Titagarh police station in Barrackpore. Among the evidence recovered from the scene was a bag containing a Bluetooth wireless headphone and some motorcycle papers. These clues, combined with CCTV footage, call detail records (CDR), internet protocol detail records (IPDR), and other technical evidence, led to the arrest of the five suspects across different locations: Barrackpore (Rahara), Birbhum (Murari), patna (Bihta), odisha (Baleshwar), and punjab (Moga). The accused were identified as Safi Khan, Md. Jamshed Ansari, Asif Khan, Rajvir Singh, and Uttam Kumar Upadhyay.

Investigating Officer Indrajit Das, currently assigned to Sankrail police station in Howrah, completed the charge sheet within 85 days. Special Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee led the prosecution, relying on strong technical evidence including gait pattern analysis, test identification parades (TIP), video enhancement, and most notably, the matching of the Bluetooth headphone’s MAC ID with a paired mobile phone found on a suspect.

Charges were framed in december 2023, and the trial began in january 2024.

Barrackpore Commissioner Aloke Rajhoria expressed satisfaction with the case’s resolution, stating, “I am pleased that we achieved a conviction within 15 months of the incident, thanks to technical evidence, particularly Bluetooth pairing, which played a vital role in convincing the court. This is the first case in the country where Bluetooth pairing was instrumental in securing a conviction.”
