Asaram gets setback from gujarat HC, plea to suspend…

The gujarat high court has rejected the plea filed by jailed self-proclaimed saint Asaram, requesting suspension of the sentence in the 2013 rape case. The court has said that there is no 'extraordinary ground' to consider the application. In the year 2023, a Gandhinagar court sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment in the case. A bench of Judge Ilesh Vora and Judge vimal Vyas, while refusing to suspend the sentence and grant him bail, said on thursday that there is no case for relief here. In january 2023, the Sessions court convicted Asaram in the 2013 rape case, which was filed by a woman living in his ashram near Gandhinagar at the time of the crime.

Arguments were not relevant to grant relief

Asaram is currently lodged in jodhpur jail in rajasthan in another rape case. The high court said that Asaram's arguments about the possible delay in disposal of his appeal, his age and medical condition were not relevant for granting relief. The court also considered the past events including the alleged murder of two boys at the Sabarmati Ashram and attacks on witnesses and relatives of the victims.

Court's conditions for release on bail

Earlier, on august 13, the rajasthan high court had allowed Asaram to undergo seven days of treatment in police custody at an Ayurvedic hospital in Maharashtra. Besides, while granting parole, the supreme court had laid down the condition that he would be accompanied by four police officers and was also allowed to take two crew members with him. He will be put up in a private cottage in pune and all medical expenses, transport costs and even police arrangements will have to be paid for.
