Doctors Demand kolkata police Chief's Resignation as assembly Considers Death Penalty Bill

Following the protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical college and Hospital, junior doctors in the city are planning a march from college Street to Lalbazar on Monday. They are calling for the resignation of Vineet Goyal, the kolkata police Commissioner. Concurrently, the West bengal assembly will start a special two-day session today to debate and potentially pass a Bill advocating for capital punishment for those convicted of rape and murder.

This move comes amid ongoing protests by the bharatiya janata party (BJP) against the mamata Banerjee-led trinamool congress (TMC), alleging that the anti-rape legislation is being used for political gain. The rape and murder of the trainee doctor has sparked nationwide outrage, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the case following orders from the calcutta High Court.

The protesting doctors accuse the kolkata police of failing to prevent a mob attack on RG Kar Medical college and Hospital on Independence Day, shortly after the incident on august 9. They are demanding the removal of Commissioner Goyal, the arrest of all those involved in the crime including the main accused, Sanjay Roy, and the suspension of former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh.

Organized by the West bengal junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), the march is set to start at 2 pm and will cover a route from college Square through several streets to Lalbazar, potentially causing traffic disruptions. The doctors have stated they will comply with police instructions during the march.

The special session of the West bengal assembly will discuss and vote on the proposed Bill to impose the death penalty for convicted rapists on its second day.
