Sandip Ghosh Sent to 8 Days of police Custody in RG Kar Medical college Corruption Case

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical college and Hospital, has been remanded to 8 days of police custody in connection with a corruption case involving financial irregularities at the institution. The arrest follows a high-profile investigation related to a tragic incident where a 31-year-old female doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical college on august 9.

On Monday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Ghosh, focusing on alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as principal. The CBI's Special Crime Branch is separately investigating the rape and murder case, while the anti-corruption branch is handling the financial irregularities.

The cbi has charged Ghosh under several sections, including Section 120B of the indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy, Section 420 IPC for cheating and dishonesty, and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, which deals with the unlawful acceptance of gratification by a public servant. The FIR (First Information Report) was filed after the cbi took over the investigation from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) based on the directions of the calcutta High Court.

This intervention came after a petition by Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, who sought a broader investigation into financial misconduct at the institution. Ali's petition raised concerns that the alleged corruption might be linked to the doctor's murder, suggesting that she might have been aware of and threatened to expose the corruption.

The high court’s decision to direct the CBI’s involvement reflects the gravity of the situation and the public's concern over potential connections between the corruption allegations and the violent crime.
