Thanks to OTT platforms, documentaries and docu-series—once seen to be slow-moving and dull—are discovering a new audience. They are starting to get traction. A variety of documentary shows, such as The Romantics, Angry Young Men, The Elephant Whisperers, and Wedding.con, are now supported by Netflix and amazon Prime Video.

Now available on Prime Video, Angry Young Men: The Salim Javed Story had a great start, rising to the top of the non-fiction genre and ranking among the top 3 with almost 2 million views in no time. Since its august 2 premiere, Netflix's documentary on SS Rajamouli, Modern Masters, has been in the top 10. Approximately 1.25 million people have viewed it.

The production of these films is now simpler and more affordable thanks to streaming services. Compared to typical movies and tv series, they are less expensive to produce, yet they frequently provide positive results. Nonetheless, urban and specialized audiences have typically been the only ones drawn to them. The emergence of streaming platforms has given birth to more innovative narrative options, which has revolutionized the documentary genre.

Platforms have made it possible for artists to explore and combine various styles, which has increased visibility and experimentation within the genre. Documentaries are an appealing option for OTT providers due to their low cost and strong audience engagement. Although true crime continues to be a popular subgenre, interest in other issues such as relationships, technology, and lifestyle is expanding. With their compelling narratives that connect with audiences, documentaries are now much more visible thanks to OTT platforms. The popularity of different documentary programs and the growing selection of material on streaming platforms are clear indicators of this change.
