West Bengal’s Teachers’ Day to Be Low-Key Amidst kolkata R*pe-Murder Case and Protests

Teachers’ Day, celebrated across india on september 5th each year to honor Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary, typically features significant festivities in West Bengal. Traditionally, chief minister mamata banerjee has marked the occasion by presenting awards to outstanding teachers. However, this year’s celebration is expected to be subdued.

Sources indicate that the state government has scaled back its Teachers’ Day activities, and mamata banerjee will not attend any related events. Instead, school Education minister Bratya Basu will oversee a more restrained observance. Basu explained to News18, “Given the distressing rape-murder case at RG Kar Hospital and the ongoing pursuit of justice from the CBI, there is little cause for celebration. Therefore, we will only hold a small-scale event.”

Observers speculate that teachers and others might stage protests related to the recent heinous crime in kolkata, prompting the government to opt for a lower profile. Following the incident, protests have drawn participants from various sectors, including education.

Bharatiya Janata party leader Agnimitra Paul questioned whether the reduced scale of celebrations and the Chief Minister’s absence are due to concerns about potential widespread protests.

Additionally, the supreme court is set to address issues concerning the kolkata case on Thursday, which will likely keep the matter in the spotlight.
