Jharkhand Excise Constable Recruitment: 12 Candidates Die During Physical Tests

The recruitment process for excise constables in jharkhand has been marred by tragedy as twelve candidates have died while undergoing physical tests. Over 100 candidates have also been hospitalized since the tests began on august 22, 2024. Reports of four deaths emerged on august 28, 2024, but the recruitment process continued until the death toll rose, prompting chief minister Hemant Soren to suspend the exams for three days.

The jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) announced that the recruitment is for 583 positions, with 1,27,572 candidates participating in the physical tests. So far, 78,023 candidates have been deemed successful, including 55,439 males and 21,582 females.

The recruitment exam was held at seven centers across jharkhand, including Giridih, Palamu, CTC Mosabani, Sahebganj, and two centers in Ranchi. The initial reports of deaths came from Palamu, with additional fatalities reported from Hazaribagh and other districts. By september 1, the death toll was confirmed to be 11, and it has since risen to 12 following another report from a ranchi hospital.

Police spokesperson Amol V. Homkar assured that medical teams, medicines, ambulances, mobile toilets, and drinking water were provided at all centers. The situation has drawn criticism from bjp rajya sabha mp Aditya Sahu, who has condemned the government's recruitment policies and called for a Rs 50 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased, as well as job provisions for their dependents.
