Delhi HC gives jolt to Sharjeel Imam, refuses hearing…

The delhi high court on wednesday (September 4) rejected the petition of student activist Sharjeel Imam, seeking early hearing on his bail plea in the alleged conspiracy case of delhi riots. The high court refused to hear the petition soon. The case will be heard on october 7. An early hearing was sought on the bail plea in the case registered against him under the anti-terrorism law UAPA regarding the alleged big conspiracy behind the communal riots in the national capital delhi in february 2020.

A bench headed by Justice suresh Kumar Kait said that since the matter is already listed for final hearing on october 7, there is no basis to extend the date. Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid and many others have been booked under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the indian Penal Code for allegedly masterminding the february 2020 riots.

According to a PTI report, Imam's lawyer said that his appeal challenging the trial court's order rejecting his bail plea has been pending for 28 months and despite the case being listed several times, it has not reached its conclusion. Justice Girish Kathpalia, who was part of this bench, said, "More than 80 cases are listed before him every day and Imam's appeal is listed at a fixed time next month along with similar appeals of other co-accused. Since the appeal is listed for final hearing on october 7 at 3:15 pm, there is no basis to extend the date." The court said that the application is rejected. Let us tell you that 53 people were killed and more than 700 were injured in this incident of violence. Violence broke out during protests against the citizenship amendment act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
