Supreme court Deliberates on delhi CM Kejriwal's Bail Plea Amidst Excise Policy Controversy

The supreme court is currently reviewing delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s requests for bail and contesting his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) related to the previously annulled excise policy case. On august 14, a Bench consisting of Justices surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan had denied kejriwal interim bail, opting to adjourn the hearing to september 5. This delay allowed the cbi to prepare and present its counter affidavit.

In its submission, the cbi emphasized that Kejriwal’s arrest was justified due to his "evasive and uncooperative" responses to queries regarding his alleged involvement in the case. The agency argued that kejriwal should not be treated the same as his co-accused, given his unique position in the case. Notably, former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K Kavitha, and former AAP communication head Vijay Nair have already been granted bail by the supreme Court.

Kejriwal was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on march 21 in connection with the excise policy scam. Following the delhi High Court's rejection of his plea for interim protection from arrest, the supreme court granted him interim bail in the ED case on July 12. However, he remains in custody due to his subsequent arrest by the cbi on june 26. He was then moved to judicial custody on june 29.
