The country has been rocked by the awful rape event that occurred in Kolkata. It happened at R.G. Kar Medical college and Hospital—a lady doctor was viciously raped and killed. Due to its inadequate investigation into the matter, mamata Banerjee's TMC administration, which is now in power, came under heavy criticism. In the end, the cbi received the case from the High Court.

The rape event sparked new worries about women's safety in India, which have persisted. Additionally, it sparked large-scale nationwide demonstrations calling for the victim's justice. In response, earlier today the aparajita Women and Child (West bengal criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024 was unanimously passed by the West bengal Assembly. There was a voice vote, and the bill passed.

Moloy Ghatak, the state's minister of law, presented the anti-rape bill before the legislature. The measure suggests the death penalty, or capital punishment, for rapists found guilty if their actions cause the victim to pass away or go into a vegetative condition. Additionally, it suggests a life sentence without the possibility of release for rape and gang rape offenders.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West bengal, referred to the law as historic and a model for others throughout the discussion. Any well-behaved person would support it, she continued. She declared that if the law passes, the police department would create a special aparajita Task Force to guarantee prompt investigation of rape cases. Banerjee requested that the opposition bjp party back the law and encourage the governor to sign it. The measure was backed by the opposition bjp party, which demanded that it be put into effect right away when it was enacted.
